Tintagel Castle Pedestrian Bridge
Tintagel Castle, located in the peninsula of Tintagel Island in North Cornwall, United Kingdom, is a thirteenth-century ruin set along the landscape's cliff sides and overlooking the Celtic Sea. The Tintagel Island presents itself as a powerful landscape, its peninsula waters carving into mountainous terrain above.
The existing bridge set below the proposed bridge design separates two cliff sides that house the remaining Tintagel Castle structures. The new Bridge Design was created to elevate the walkway between the two Castle structures, providing ease of access and elevating the Bridge to take advantage of the surrounding views. The Tintagel Bridge Design was created to evoke a similar sense of power and beauty while drawing inspiration from the sweeping and organic shapes seen in the
surrounding landscape and present in the swirling waters below.
The architecture and design of the Bridge Design are directly inspired by the organic landscape and water geometries that surround it. The design began with a simple vierendeel truss design located below the cliff span. Within multiple iterations the vierendeel truss was adapted to a triangular truss to allow for seamless integration of the below and above deck structures. Pinned supports hold the arch structure below the deck. The deck sits atop the base of the lower truss, mimicking the arched design below. The upper arch and handrails undulate to mimic the sweeping waves below, providing further structure and acting as guardrails along the span of the bridge.
